The fennec fox is a small species of fox found in the deserts of North Africa. They are the smallest canine species but have the largest ears relative to their body size which are used to both aid their hearing and to help them to control their body temperature in the hostile environments in which they live. Fennec foxes are largely nocturnal animals as this helps protect them from the scorching African heat and keeps them safe from predators during the day. Their adorable appearance has led to them being kept as pets throughout much of their natural range and also overseas. Male fennec foxes are known as reynards and females are called  *vixens*.
